The Benefits of Good Posture

Good Posture Really Does Lead To Good Health

Many aches, pains and problems in the body can be attributed to poor posture. You mother may have always said “Stand up straight”. You want to, but that’s not always possible. For various reasons, many people take on different postures that are less than optimal for great health.

What makes this even more difficult is that the soft tissues and vertebrae of the body can literally inhibit proper posture, because of shortened, tight muscles as well as an immobile spine not allowing it.

For example:

A common postural problem many people have these days is termed forward head. As a poor neck posture allows the head to move more forward, this position can cause all sorts of problems. For every inch the head goes forward, the pressure on the neck and shoulders increases by around 10 pounds.

A long term problem can lead to disc herniations, muscle strains, tightness and neck and shoulder pain. What most people don’t realize is that hands on treatment needs to be administered to lengthen the muscle, tendons, facsia and mobilize the vertebrae.

Overtime, a chiropractor can improve postural problems and help you to physically maintain a more optimal posture. In addition, poor posture can speed up the wear and tear on joints and increase the risk of suffering from Osteoarthritis later on in life.

Chiropractors have many years of education and experience in evaluating and correcting posture. It’s not only making corrections through treatment, but looking for ways to help you live your life and maintain the best posture possible.

Besides regular visits to a chiropractor, what else can you do to help improve your posture?

  • Start doing neck exercises and stretches- This is a really great way to gain control over your neck muscles which will help with better flexibility as well as improve blood and lymph circulation vital for better health.
  • Take breaks with everything you do- If you are ever sitting for long periods, you need to get up and stretch, get some movement for good blood circulation and drink some water. Too many people sit in front of a computer for hours on end without any breaks, which can worsen a forward head position with aches, pains and headaches.
  • Use a pillow that promotes correct posture—A very supportive neck pillow is vital since we spend so much of our day asleep.  This is a time that you can help your posture instead of hurt it by having the right pillow.
  • Always wear properly designed backpacks—This can have a significant effect on posture. Also, for women, carrying around a heavy purse strapped to one side of the shoulder, can be very negative to good posture, neck and shoulder health.
