Scoliosis– Are There More Options Than Braces and Surgery?

Learn how chiropractic care can be an effective way to positively help scoliosis.

Scoliosis is an abnormal curve in the vertebrae. Of course the vertebrae has curves. If it didn’t, we would have a difficult time moving the way we do. The spine is usually S-shaped when it is viewed to the side. However, when observed straight on, it should be completely straight.

When a person has scoliosis there is a sideways curvature of the spine when observed from the front.  This condition can start early in a child’s life and may go unnoticed depending on the severity or degree of the curve.

Since you can’t actually see the spine, how can you know that scoliosis is present?

There are signs such as a noticeable uneven waist or shoulder line. Another noticeable landmark could be the ribcage. It can be more prominent on one side and if the person is asked to bend forward it becomes even more evident.

What’s the cause of scoliosis?

For the majority of cases the cause is unknown. Although some experts attribute it to differing leg lengths, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis or muscle spasm, there is really no concrete evidence to suggest any definite cause.

Can chiropractic help this condition?

There is still no research to definitely prove that chiropractic can improve or help give relief for scoliosis. However that doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been people greatly helped through chiropractic care.

Also, it’s important to know that traditional treatment of bracing and surgery isn’t always the most effective treatment either. Initially, studies have shown that curves will straighten out 50 percent of the time using braces. However, long-term bracing doesn’t seem to be as effective with gradual losses of correction.

Except for extreme curvatures, bracing and surgery might not be the best option

Robert Mendelsohn, MD has commented that scoliosis is often over diagnosed as well as over treated. Unless the spinal curvature is extremely severe, does it become a serious problem. Don’t accept a diagnosis of bracing and surgery without first exploring other less radical and non-invasive treatments including chiropractic.

It just makes sense that a doctor of chiropractic that specializes in the health and proper positioning of the vertebrae, can have a positive impact on the improvement of this condition. It’s important to remember that a body without subluxations is in a far more optimal position to resist diseases and abnormalities, including scoliosis.
